Marketing copy for CBD oil tends to outrun the science behind it, but that doesn’t mean the science is empty. A handful of peer-reviewed studies specifically involving dogs exist, and they’re worth walking through directly rather than taking secondhand summaries at face value.

Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine ran a study published in 2018 looking at CBD’s effect on dogs diagnosed with osteoarthritis. That’s a meaningfully stronger evidence base than most pet supplements on the market can claim, even if it falls short of the evidence bar required for formal drug approval. The honest takeaway sits between the extremes of “completely unproven” and “clinically established,” closer to “promising for specific, studied uses, with real gaps still remaining.”

Breed and Size Variation

None of the major published trials have been large enough to break results down meaningfully by breed, which leaves an open question about whether, say, a Chihuahua and a Great Dane metabolize CBD at comparable relative rates once body weight is accounted for. Veterinary pharmacology more broadly recognizes that metabolic rate doesn’t always scale in a perfectly linear way with body weight across very different size classes, which is part of why some clinicians who work with CBD suggest starting more conservatively with both very small and very large breeds until more size-specific data becomes available. Peer review itself is worth a quick word here too. Both flagship studies went through the standard peer review process required for publication in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association and comparable outlets, meaning independent experts in the field evaluated the methodology before publication. That’s a meaningfully different bar than a company-funded white paper or an in-house study that never went through outside review, and it’s a distinction worth checking whenever a product’s marketing cites “research” without naming where or how that research was published.
